About

If you want to teach phonics like a boss and live your best teaching life, you’re in the right place.

I am a kindergarten teacher who has taught in all the primary grades and a self-proclaimed phonics fanatic who has helped other primary teachers take hold of their phonics instruction and create a system that sets teachers and students up for success.

After being in the classroom for 7 years, I have found that teaching Littles how to read is one of my favorite things.  Wow, what a crazy, beautiful trip it is to see a child come into school not knowing a single letter to reading books!  There’s really nothing like the pride they feel through each step of the way.  Just… WOW!  I love it so much!  I also really enjoy making fun and engaging learning resources to help students learn, and that’s where this journey to teacherpreneur comes into play!

I know what it’s like to “fit it all in” and teach phonics to students at different levels of the playing field.

But it wasn’t always this way…

When I began teaching I remember thinking how on earth could I possibly teach everything I needed to teach in such a small block of time that was set aside for direct phonics instruction.  I quickly realized that there is a missing link between what works in theory – what’s in all the textbooks and courses we take in college and what our administrators say is possible – and what actually holds up inside a classroom.  When having students from different backgrounds, different learning styles, different levels of understanding and background knowledge, students with no formal school background, it is easy to become overwhelmed and feel defeated before any teaching even begins.

I decided I needed to take matters into my own hands if I was going to meet the needs of my Littles.  I talked with veteran teachers, I observed phonics lessons, attended professional development on my own time, did a lot of research, and read a lot of books.  All that really taught me was that I needed to create a system that could easily be tweaked to meet the needs of my students from year to year.  A system that I could adjust as the needs of my students changed and evolved – because let’s face it, what works for my class might not work for others, and what works for others doesn’t always work for me, and, of course… what worked for me this year, might not work for me next year.

With all this in mind, I started to think about how to connect the link between the phonics skills and knowledge students need to learn and how to actually teach it in a way that speaks to primary kiddos.  What I found was 7 key elements that can be woven into any phonics system.  With these components, you can effectively teach a variety of students, who have a variety of needs.  When you don’t have to think about how you are going to teach, you can bring the focus back to what is really important – actual teaching!
